Do you have a venting partner?
Everyone needs at least one person they can vent to. Someone who will listen without speaking or judgment. One of the first people you think to turn to when you’re stuck — usually in some kind of work-fueled emotional turmoil, or a hangover from a meeting and/or project that didn’t go at all the way you planned.
Sometimes they’re a co-worker; sometimes not. There are pros and cons to both.
Someone you work with will usually “get it”—they understand the politics and the people. But choose carefully. You need to trust this person implicitly to keep things between the two of you. And two cautions here: don’t vent down, and be careful about making your direct manager your venting person.
For someone outside of the workplace, the good news is you don’t have to worry about the conversation getting back to someone at the office. And while they may not understand the people and politics as fully as you might want, they’re also a bit more objective. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
Believe it or not, there are some ground rules to productive venting:
🔹 One of them is to set a timeframe—10–15 minutes max. This is critical, because otherwise you can end up in a doom loop: same story, same frustration, more heat… and somehow you feel worse when you’re done.
🔹 Another is to name what you want before you start. Do you just need them to listen? Or do you want their thoughts at the end? If you do want their thoughts, this is where you can ask your ventee for them — but you need to be ready to hear them.
This is also why one of the first things I do in many coaching sessions is find out how my client is doing. This can become a bit of a vent session, and that’s okay. Sometimes people need to get those thoughts out in the open to be able to move forward; and often their vent gives me clues about what I need to think about from a coaching standpoint.
Do you have a venting partner? And do you have any “rules” that make venting more effective?
